“It’s important that hijama is performed by trained, experienced & qualified practitioners in clean, sterile conditions. Additionally, medical professionals should be consulted before undergoing this or any other alternative therapy.”
Hijama, also known as wet cupping therapy, involves creating small incisions on the skin and using suction to draw out blood. While some believe it has therapeutic benefits for pain relief, detoxification, and improving circulation, there are potential risks and harms associated with it if not done correctly or under proper medical supervision.
Potential Harmful Effects of Hijama:
- Infection: If the tools or environment are not properly sterilized, there is a risk of bacterial or viral infections, including hepatitis and HIV.
- Skin Damage: The incisions and suction can cause bruising, scarring, or even skin damage if performed too aggressively or on sensitive skin.
- Blood Loss: Excessive blood removal can lead to anemia or other complications, especially if performed too frequently or improperly.
- Allergic Reactions: Some people may experience reactions to the oils, creams, or materials used in the process.
- Exacerbation of Conditions: People with certain medical conditions (like blood clotting disorders, or those on blood thinners) may experience worsened symptoms or increased bleeding.
- Unsuitable for Certain Groups: Pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions should be cautious, as they may be at higher risk of adverse effects.
